Abstract Skulls are a critical part of the crocodile through which we can distinguish between the different genera and species. Most of the crocodiles which previously studied from the Eocene–Oligocene to the Miocene times in Egypt were concerned with the identification of the genus and sometimes on the species without a detailed focusing on the evolution, comparing between them and trying to determine the ancestor or the closest species of them to the living crocodile in Egypt. The only known living species ofCrocodylusin Egypt isCrocodylus niloticuswhich inhabits Lake Nasser in Aswan, southern of Egypt. From the Cenozoic era, broad snouted crocodiles diversity had been reported in Egypt. About 35 million years ago, through the Eocene epoch, the crocodilian fossils from Fayum provided evidence of the diversity of crocodile species includingCrocodylus articepsandCrocodylus megarhinus. In addition to that, throughout the Early Miocene epoch, from about 18 million years ago, in Wadi Moghra Egypt crocodilian fossils demonstrate another diversity, extended to the first appearance ofRimasuchus lloydiwhich placed inside theOsteolaeminaelater. By various measurements and carefully morphological examination of the different species recorded from Egypt, it was found that there are high levels of variation in morphology of the skulls including their dimensions, and the sutures shapes especially between premaxilla and maxilla ventrally and also between maxilla and palatine, as well as the extension of the maxillary ramus of the ectopterygoid. Using cluster analysis, it is proven that EoceneCrocodylusis the ancestor to all known broad snouted species recorded from Egypt since the Eocene time. The closest species to the Eocene specimen is the livingCrocodylusniloticus. Abstract Although trionychians have a rich fossil record, much of their fossil diversity is known from the Cretaceous and Paleogene, and little is known about their evolutionary history in the Neogene. We here describe cranial and shell material of trionychians from the Early Miocene Moghra Formation of Egypt that we attribute to a new carettochelyid taxon,Allaeochelys meylanisp. nov., and to theTrionyxlineage.Allaeochelys meylanisp. nov. fills a temporal gap between previously described taxa and exhibits a series of unique features, including greatly thickened cranial bones, a broad bony wall posterior to the orbit, a large fossa formed by the maxilla and premaxilla at the anterior third of the triturating surface, and a medial process on peripheral II.Allaeochelys meylanisp. nov. also documents the oldest occurrence ofCarettochelyidaeon the Afro-Arabian continent, while theTrionyxmaterial reported herein provides unambiguous evidence for the presence of this lineage on the Afro-Arabian continent no later than the Early Miocene.more » « lessFree, publicly-accessible full text available December 1, 2026

Abstract Accretion rates ( ) of young stars show a strong correlation with object mass (M); however, extension of the relation into the substellar regime is less certain. Here, we present the Comprehensive Archive of Substellar and Planetary Accretion Rates (CASPAR), the largest compilation to date of substellar accretion diagnostics. CASPAR includes: 658 stars, 130 brown dwarfs, and 10 bound planetary mass companions. In this work, we investigate the contribution of methodological systematics to scatter in the relation and compare brown dwarfs to stars. In our analysis, we rederive all quantities using self-consistent models, distances, and empirical line flux to accretion luminosity scaling relations to reduce methodological systematics. This treatment decreases the original 1σscatter in the relation by ∼17%, suggesting that it makes only a small contribution to the dispersion. The CASPAR rederived values are best fit by from 10MJto 2M⊙, confirming previous results. However, we argue that the brown-dwarf and stellar populations are better described separately and by accounting for both mass and age. Therefore, we derive separate age-dependent relations for these regions and find a steepening in the brown-dwarf slope with age. Within this mass regime, the scatter decreases from 1.36 dex to 0.94 dex, a change of ∼44%. This result highlights the significant role that evolution plays in the overall spread of accretion rates, and suggests that brown dwarfs evolve faster than stars, potentially as a result of different accretion mechanisms.more » « less

The mass deployment of energy storage and distributed energy resources has become a major goal across several states in the United States. However, the viability and reality of such a goal in New York City has been put in question as possible financial burdens and execution risks are still unclear, while policies and regulations are still not fully settled. This paper provides a foundational overview of the Lazard LCOS study with emphasis on forward states which have successfully implemented mass deployment of energy storage technologies. “Adders” are related to the practicality in deploying these systems in a highly regulated and densely populated urban area such as New York City. It also discusses details on the typical financial structure/incentives that support the policies and regulations that allow for achieving these clean energy goals. Furthermore, many states have begun to focus on alternative battery technologies rather than just Li-ion, and as such, New York State is following suit. Utilizing several similar works that have begun to touch on these considerations individually and various accredited resources, this paper discusses “adders” for New York City (and New York State as a whole) as they develop similar approaches that are unique to them and offers helpful conclusions and recommendations to achieve their deployment goals.more » « less
